GTA 6 misses 2025: Rockstar sets a May 26, 2026 launch

Rockstar confirms GTA VI won’t release in 2025: launch moves to May 26, 2026. What the statement says and why the studio needs more time.

We finally have a date — just not the one fans hoped for. On May 2, 2025, Rockstar Games announced that GTA VI won’t make it out in 2025: launch has slipped to May 26, 2026. Until then, the only official guidance was 2025, the year shown in the first trailer, with Take-Two pointing to the fall.

What Rockstar said

The statement, signed by Rockstar Games, apologises for the longer wait and admits the reaction to a new GTA has left the whole team humbled. The reason is a familiar one for the studio: with every game it aims to exceed expectations, and GTA VI needs more time to hit the level of quality players expect. It ends with a promise to share more “soon”, which, given Rockstar’s usual silence between announcements, was the part fans latched onto.

What came next

That promise was kept quickly: just four days later, on May 6, Trailer 2 arrived alongside the official site introducing Leonida’s characters and regions.

The May 2026 date wasn’t final either: in November 2025 Rockstar delayed the game again to November 19, 2026, where you’ll find the full timeline of release dates.

Why so many delays?

It’s nothing new for Rockstar. The studio works on very long development cycles and would rather delay than ship an unfinished game: Red Dead Redemption 2 was pushed back twice before launching in 2018, and GTA V slipped from spring to September 17, 2013. Both ended up among the best games of their generation.
