GTA VI launches on

GTA 6 Online will arrive in 2027, says Twitch CEO

Twitch's CEO says GTA VI's multiplayer is coming in 2027, while Take-Two calls the game a single-player title. What we know about the next GTA Online.

GTA VI's multiplayer won't launch alongside the game. That's the takeaway from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, who told Bloomberg at the Tokyo Game Show on September 17, 2026 that after several meetings with Rockstar he expects a big viewership bump when GTA VI launches, "but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer." In other words, 2027.

What they said

Dan Clancy, Twitch CEO

He's spent a lot of time with Rockstar on its plans and on engaging creators; multiplayer arrives in 2027 and will lift viewing on the platform meaningfully

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO

At the shareholder meeting the same day: GTA VI is a single-player title due in November, and the current GTA Online will keep being supported after launch

Rockstar itself still hasn't said a word about GTA VI's online mode.

At the same meeting, Zelnick made three more points: there's no recurrent consumer spending expected at launch ("there's no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch"), the game will ship localized in 13 languages, and PC is "becoming more and more important" to the company, though he didn't announce a PC version. On marketing, he said the footprint "will be very significant."

Why it makes sense

The two statements fit together. Take-Two calling GTA VI single-player doesn't mean there's no online; it means it won't be there on day one. There's precedent too: GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA V, and Red Dead Online went into beta a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. Separating the launches lets the story stand on its own and buys time to prepare servers that, given the hype, will face unprecedented load.

Clancy isn't speaking from the sidelines either: Twitch and Rockstar have worked closely of late, with regular Twitch Drops in GTA Online and roleplay-themed weeks, like the one tied to nopixel V. He says he hasn't seen anything close to this level of anticipation in his seven years running the platform.

What about the current GTA Online?

If you play GTA Online, there's nothing to worry about yet: Take-Two confirms it will keep getting content after November. The likely scenario is that it runs alongside GTA VI for a while, with Rockstar gradually moving the community over once the new online arrives. How that transition works (progress, money or character transfers) remains a mystery.

Our take

It's the clearest indirect confirmation yet that a new GTA Online is coming, and that it won't be in 2026. For anyone buying GTA VI in November, Jason and Lucia's story will fill the first few months; the online, when it lands, will be a launch in its own right.
