GTA VI launches on

Rockstar confirms the first GTA 6 trailer for December 5

Sam Houser announced the first trailer for the next GTA to mark Rockstar’s 25th anniversary, and the studio later set the day and time: December 5, 2023.

This article is from November 8, 2023. Some details may have changed since then.

Ten years after GTA V launched, Rockstar Games finally put a date on what everyone was waiting for: a first look at the next Grand Theft Auto. It happened in two steps — first a letter from its co-founder, then an image that needed no explanation.

November 8: Sam Houser’s letter

On November 8, 2023, Sam Houser signed a message marking Rockstar Games’ 25th anniversary (the studio was founded in December 1998). In it he thanked players for a quarter century of support and recalled the idea the company was built on: that video games could become as central to culture as any other form of entertainment.

But the line that went around the world was a different one: in early December, Rockstar would release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. The studio had confirmed back in February 2022 that development was under way, but hadn’t shown a single image until then.

December 1: day and time

Three weeks later, on December 1, the final confirmation came with an image of palm trees against a pink and orange sky — an obvious nod to Vice City: Trailer 1. Tuesday, December 5, 9AM ET, which is 2PM in the UK.

The artwork fuelled every theory going: fans had been talking about a return to the Miami-inspired city for years, and the game’s title still hadn’t been announced. The VI numbering only became official when the trailer went live.

What happened next

The wait ended sooner than planned: the video leaked online and Rockstar brought its release forward to the evening of December 4 (US time). Everything it showed is covered in our article on GTA VI Trailer 1, and you can follow all the latest on the GTA VI game page.
