After a decade of waiting, Grand Theft Auto VI is official. Rockstar Games released the game’s first trailer, confirming what fans had wanted for years: the series is going back to Vice City, this time within the fictional state of Leonida, in what the studio calls the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series.

The premiere was set for Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 9AM ET, but a leak on social media pushed Rockstar to release it the night before.

What the trailer shows

  • Lucia, the series’ first female lead of the 3D era, appears in the opening scene in an orange prison jumpsuit, talking to an officer about her situation.
  • A partner in crime, with whom she pulls Bonnie and Clyde-style robberies. We’d later learn his name is Jason.
  • A satirical portrait of modern-day Florida through social media clips and livestreams: beach parties, brawls, alligators wandering into stores and every kind of excess.
  • A Vice City more alive than ever, with packed beaches, nightlife and luxury cars, plus swamps, keys and rural areas outside the city.

All set to Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road”.

Platforms and date

The trailer ended with a clear message: 2025, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PC wasn’t mentioned, which is typical for Rockstar, who usually launch on consoles first.

A YouTube phenomenon

The video broke records: it passed 90 million YouTube views in its first 24 hours, a record for a video game reveal.

What came next

Rockstar didn’t show the game again until May 2025, when it dropped Trailer 2 a few days after the first delay. The 2025 date didn’t hold and the game was eventually set for November 19, 2026. You’ll find everything published about the game on the GTA VI page.
