GTA 6 on Xbox Cloud Gaming: Microsoft denies streaming exclusivity
A report said Xbox had exclusive GTA VI streaming rights; hours later Microsoft said it won’t stream exclusively or to PC. Here’s what we know and what’s still unclear.
For a few hours it looked like GTA VI would have a single cloud gaming home. On October 6, 2026, The Verge reported that Microsoft had secured exclusive streaming rights to the game from launch. The next day, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball pushed back on social media: GTA VI won't be streaming exclusively on Xbox, and it won't be streaming to PC either.
What was reported and what was denied
Point | Reported on October 6 | Xbox's response on October 7 |
|---|---|---|
Exclusivity | Xbox Cloud Gaming would be the only cloud service with GTA VI | "The game will not be streaming exclusively" |
PC | PC players could stream it from the cloud | No streaming to PC either |
Xbox launch | November 19 | Confirmed: November 19 on Xbox Series |
According to the original report, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told staff at an all-hands meeting that the company was preparing something around GTA VI that "no other platform holder is doing." That line remains unexplained, and The Verge's reporter later acknowledged the deal appears to be more complicated than first reported.
So can I play GTA 6 in the cloud?
Right now there's no confirmation that GTA VI will be on any cloud gaming service, Xbox Cloud Gaming or otherwise. Ball's statement rules out two specific things (exclusivity and PC) without saying whether the game will be playable via Xbox's cloud on phones or TVs. What we do know is that GTA VI launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that no PC version has been announced.
If you only play on PC, that's bad news: the cloud looked like the one way to play on day one without buying a console.
Changes coming to Xbox Cloud Gaming
The same report also described changes to the service ahead of November: a pay-as-you-go option that doesn't require Game Pass, and hour caps on streaming across subscription tiers (15 hours on Ultimate, 10 on Premium and 5 on Essential). Microsoft hasn't officially confirmed them, so treat them with caution.
Our take
The episode sums up Xbox's position neatly: PlayStation holds GTA VI's marketing deal, and Microsoft is looking for its own angle on the biggest launch of the decade. Rockstar has put GTA V on Xbox Cloud Gaming before, so some kind of arrangement wouldn't be surprising. Until there's an official announcement, though, the safe assumption is that GTA VI will be played, at least at first, on console and locally only. If you haven't ordered it yet, here's everything about pre-orders and the Ultimate Edition.
