GTA VI launches on

GTA 6 is breaking pre-order records on Xbox, though PS5 leads

Microsoft says GTA VI is breaking pre-order records on Xbox after a report of internal worry over PS5 dominance. What Xbox said, and what it actually means.

GTA VI pre-orders are a console battle too. In late September 2026, The Verge reported, citing Xbox sources, that pre-orders were heavily skewed toward PS5 and that this was causing concern inside Microsoft. The response came on September 25 from Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball: GTA VI is breaking records on Xbox, and the company expects to break more through the fall.

What Xbox actually said

Ball said Xbox is "very happy" with pre-orders, that the game is breaking records on the platform, and that internal analysis shows its share of pre-orders matches its share of the console market.

That last line is the key one, because it doesn't contradict the report. With far more PS5s in homes, most pre-orders being on PS5 is expected; Xbox's point is that, proportionally, it isn't doing worse than it should. What hasn't happened, at least so far, is GTA VI helping Xbox gain ground on PlayStation.

Why PS5 starts ahead

Factor

Effect

Install base

PS5 has a much larger installed base than Xbox Series

Marketing deal

Sony is GTA VI's promotional partner, with campaigns and products built around PS5

Console prices

Current consoles cost far more than in 2020, which discourages switching platforms for a single game

What it means for launch

For players, not much: GTA VI launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with the same content on both. The interesting part is the backdrop: Sony and Microsoft both need GTA VI to be a huge hit to revive stagnant console sales, and it arrives at a time when hardware prices are a real barrier. If you haven't ordered yet, here's what each edition includes.
