Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM, joins Rockstar Games

In August 2023, Cfx.re — the team behind FiveM and RedM — became part of Rockstar Games, which had already opened its mod policy to roleplay.

On August 11, 2023, Rockstar Games announced that Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM and RedM — the platforms powering the biggest roleplay and creator communities for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — had officially become part of the company.

What are FiveM and RedM?

They're modifications that let people run their own multiplayer servers for GTA V (FiveM) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (RedM), with custom rules, maps and systems. They power the roleplay servers where players act as cops, criminals or everyday citizens in persistent sessions — for years among the most-watched content on Twitch.

Why Rockstar did it

Rockstar said it had watched its creative community expand what its games could do for years, especially through roleplay servers, and had recently expanded its mod policy to officially cover mods made by that community. With Cfx.re on board, its goal is to support server developers and improve the services players and creators receive.

GTA RP Week on Twitch (update)

On December 14, 2023, Rockstar marked the deal with GTA RP Week on Twitch, from December 15 to 21: the largest subscription giveaway in Twitch's history, with more than 600,000 subs gifted in the GTA V category, roleplay streamers from around the world featured on Twitch's front page, and selected viewers receiving a free sub for their favourite streamer.

What it meant

The acquisition legitimised a scene that had spent years in a grey area under Rockstar's rules, and made it clear the company sees roleplay as part of its ecosystem. Its most visible consequence came in 2026, when Rockstar unveiled nopixel V, the next version of the most famous roleplay server. It also fuelled speculation about roleplay's role in GTA VI's multiplayer — something Rockstar hasn't confirmed.
