GTA VI launches on

GTA III ghost town mod rebuilt 22 years later, now fully walkable

A 2004 mod that linked Liberty City to GTA III’s hidden ghost town was lost for years. It’s been rebuilt from scratch, now with collisions so you can finally explore it.

A piece of GTA modding history that had been written off as lost media is back. On June 16, 2026, modder Mod_Saver released Ghost City Available, a from-scratch rebuild of the 2004 mod that let you drive into GTA III's hidden "ghost town." And this time, you won't fall through the floor.

GTA III's floating secret

The game's opening scene, the bank job where Catalina shoots Claude and leaves him for dead, doesn't take place in playable Liberty City. Rockstar built a handful of separate streets, floating far away from the map, just for that cutscene. Here's how the studio described it:

"We think what people refer to as 'ghost town' is just the small area of a city we built for the bank heist scene at the very start of the game. It never had a name, but we wanted it to be somewhere separate from the Liberty map and so we built these few streets floating in space and assumed no one would ever find them."

Of course, people found them. The trick was the Dodo, the clipped-wing plane at Francis International Airport: take off at just the right angle, break out of the map and you could reach that impossible island.

The bridge that vanished

In 2004, modder Eliano86 built a bridge linking Liberty City to the ghost town, no stunt flying required. Rockstar even gave it a nod on its Newswire in 2012: "someone built a bridge mod so you can actually drive there now – amazing…"

The mod lived on gta-downloads.com, though, and when that site went offline, the files went with it. Even the Wayback Machine had nothing. For years, all that was left were old videos.

Rebuilt, and finally solid

With no files to work from, Mod_Saver recreated the mod from scratch using a 2012 video that showed it in action, and fixed the original's biggest flaw along the way. The 2004 version was purely visual: you could see the ghost town, but step onto it and Claude dropped straight through. The new version adds the missing collision files (.col), so the whole island is solid and drivable for the first time.

"Instead of letting it fade into history, I decided to fully recreate and resurrect it," the modder wrote. "22 years later, I have finally built the missing collision files to make the entire island solid and fully playable for the very first time."

Why it matters

It's a small mod, but it touches on something the industry worries about more and more: preservation. A huge chunk of early-2000s modding history lived on websites that no longer exist, and the mods, tools and documentation disappeared with them. Someone rescuing one of those from a YouTube video, and improving it in the process, says a lot about a community that still treats GTA III as worth preserving 25 years on. It's also a reminder of how different the original game, seams and secrets included, is from its official remaster.
