reGTA ports GTA III, Vice City and Liberty City Stories to New 3DS

reGTA brings three classic GTAs to the New Nintendo 3DS with a custom touch UI. The real news: a finished reverse-engineered Liberty City Stories port.

Three classic GTAs on a Nintendo handheld, and the least expected of them is the big deal. On September 13, 2026, developer Epic (EpicReds0817), who previously brought Super Mario 64 to the 3DS, released the trailer for reGTA Collection: native New Nintendo 3DS ports of GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA Liberty City Stories, with the source code public. The headline is Liberty City Stories, whose reverse-engineered port had been stalled for years. You can now finish its main story on real hardware.

What's in the collection

  • GTA III, built on re3 and using your PC game data. Tested on New 3DS, with frame drops in busy scenes.
  • GTA Vice City, built on reVC and using your PC game data. Tested on New 3DS, with frame drops and occasional audio stutter.
  • GTA Liberty City Stories, built on reLCS (reStories) and using converted data from your PS2 copy. Main story completed on a physical console; side content not yet verified.

This isn't a lazy recompile. Each game gets its own bottom-screen interface in its own color (blue for GTA III, pink for Vice City, red for LCS), touch controls, Nintendo-style button prompts and an on-screen keyboard for cheats. Loading is faster, audio is converted to suit the hardware, and there's a personal touch: each game plays a specific song in its final mission. On September 26, the developer also showed stereoscopic 3D working.

Why Liberty City Stories is the real story

GTA III and Vice City have been ported to just about everything thanks to re3 and reVC: Switch, PS Vita, Wii U and even Dreamcast. Liberty City Stories, the 2005 PSP game, was a different story. Its reverse-engineering project, reStories/reLCS, was left unfinished and never reached a point where the campaign could be played through. reGTA completes that work, fixing missions, saves, world changes, cutscenes and vehicles until the story could be beaten on a New 3DS.

What you'll need

There's plenty of fine print:

  1. A New 3DS, New 3DS XL or New 2DS XL. Older models won't work: the ports rely on the "New" models' faster CPU, L2 cache and extra memory.
  2. Homebrew access or custom firmware, depending on which format you install.
  3. To build the games yourself from source.
  4. Your own copies: GTA III and Vice City on PC, and Liberty City Stories on PS2, whose files have to be converted with a separate tool.
  5. A good SD card: the developer warns that streaming the city depends heavily on its speed.

There are no ready-made builds with the games included, and that's exactly what keeps projects like this alive: the code belongs to the community, but Rockstar's assets have to come from a game you bought.

A busy time for the re3 scene

reGTA lands during a burst of activity around re3 and reVC. In the weeks before, other fans showed GTA III running natively on the original Wii and Vice City on GameCube, and in July one modder went as far as linking GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas with portals. Five years after Take-Two tried to wipe them off GitHub, these projects are more useful than ever.

Update: more movement in October

Two more developments on the reverse-engineering front:

  • On September 27, a reVC fork merged fixes that keep vehicle physics (grip, wheel spin, boats, collisions) consistent above 30 fps, one of these games' longstanding problems.
  • On October 6, a matching decompilation of the PS2 version of GTA III published its roadmap. The goal is source code that compiles into an executable identical, byte for byte, to the original. It's very early: under 1% of the code matches so far, though it can already rebuild the full executable by combining original parts.

Our take

Liberty City Stories on a Nintendo handheld sounds like a novelty, but it's worth more than that. With its engine finally complete, LCS can follow the same path as GTA III and Vice City and turn up on whatever hardware the community sets its sights on next. If you've got a modded New 3DS and enjoy tinkering, it's a lovely project. If not, it's one more sign of how far fans will go while they wait for GTA 6.
