For 25 years, GTA III's world ended at the water's edge. Not anymore. Released on April 9, 2026, Upstate Liberty is a massive mod that adds countryside, new roads and a whole new city, Gostburg, north of the original map. Plenty of players are already calling it a full-blown expansion.

What's new

The mod extends the map north of Shoreside Vale. Drive through the island's tunnels and a new region opens up:

  • Countryside and small towns, with back roads, woods and residential areas.
  • Gostburg, a city with its own downtown, shops and internet café.
  • Highways and tunnels linking it all to Liberty City, seamlessly, just like the rest of the game.

One look at the map says it all: the new area is nearly as big as the three original islands combined.

More than a map

What sets Upstate Liberty apart from other map mods is that the game actually uses it. Post-launch updates have woven it into the campaign:

  • 1.0.0 (April 9, 2026): launch, with the full new region.
  • 1.1.0 (April 20, 2026): the opening cutscene moves to Gostburg, side missions are adapted for the countryside and Gostburg, and 100 new hidden packages are added.
  • 1.1.1 (April 22, 2026): fixes for garages and distant models, plus fewer external dependencies.
  • 1.1.2b (May 22, 2026): ModLoader support, crash fixes and updated tooling.

Who made it

The project is led by Adi (AdusPL), backed by a long list of GTA III scene regulars, including SilentPatch creator Silent and Fire_Head. The credits also thank the re3 team, the game's reverse-engineering project, and other key names in trilogy modding. It shows: this is the work of people who know GTA III's engine better than anyone.

What you'll need

  1. GTA III for PC, version 1.0. It's the only supported version, and it won't work with The Definitive Edition.
  2. Ultimate ASI Loader, installed before the mod.
  3. Recommended: up-to-date SilentPatch, Widescreen Fix and SkyGFX. Older SilentPatch builds crash on the loading screen.
  4. A fresh save: save files from the original game aren't compatible.

Our take

Upstate Liberty is one of those mods that changes how you remember a game. GTA III was always a closed-off city; now it has a horizon. It's also had an unexpected side effect: by pushing the engine in ways Rockstar never tested, it uncovered bugs that had been hiding for 25 years. Several were later fixed in SilentPatch's big 2026 update, such as tilted rocks that were lit wrong at night and broken glass that didn't line up with Gostburg's windows.
