GTA 6: An Extended Look set a live record and drove 100,000 Netflix sign-ups
Nearly 4 million concurrent viewers across co-streams and over 100,000 new Netflix subscribers in six hours. The numbers behind the GTA VI gameplay premiere.
The premiere of An Extended Look, the 27-minute GTA VI gameplay showcase that debuted on Netflix on August 27, 2026, now has numbers attached. Two studies published in the following weeks measure its impact: Stream Charts on live co-streams and Ampere Analysis on Netflix sign-ups. In short: an all-time 2026 record for a gaming showcase on live platforms, and a solid if not historic boost for Netflix.
A live viewing record
Although the video sat behind Netflix's paywall at first, streamers were allowed to rebroadcast it while reacting, and thousands did:
Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
Peak concurrent viewers | 3.97 million |
Channels co-streaming | 9,038 |
Total hours watched | 5.2 million |
Previous 2026 record | Summer Game Fest, 3.81 million |
The biggest individual streams were led by two Spanish creators:
Streamer | Peak viewers |
|---|---|
IlloJuan | 233,520 |
Rubius | 191,056 |
IShowSpeed | 177,887 |
By platform, Twitch took 44% of hours watched, YouTube 34.8% and Kick 20.2%.
What chat was saying
Stream Charts analyzed more than 100,000 messages about GTA VI over three hours. Most were neutral (spamming the game's name, talking about Twitch's new GTA VI category). Positive messages, 11-15%, mostly praised the visuals and gameplay; negative ones, 17-20%, were largely aimed at technical problems on Twitch and Netflix during the premiere, though a portion did knock the presentation itself, likening the game to "an expensive GTA V expansion."
31.1 million views on Netflix
Netflix shared its own numbers too, reported by Bloomberg on September 1: in its first four days the video racked up 31.1 million views, was the most-watched title on the platform that week, ahead of a new Robert De Niro film, and hit number one in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks.
Over 100,000 Netflix sign-ups in six hours
According to Ampere Analysis, via GamesIndustry.biz, the premiere drove more than 100,000 new Netflix subscriptions in the US during the six-hour exclusive window. If everyone picked the cheapest plan, that works out to roughly $1 million, a rough estimate made before Netflix's latest price rise.
That's a lot for a 27-minute video, but not a record: it was the third-biggest subscriber spike of the year on the platform, behind the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano MMA fight and the final season of Stranger Things. Where it stood out was reactivation: around 5% of viewers who hadn't used Netflix in 30 days came back to watch it, a far higher rate than any series or film in the same period. It's unknown whether Netflix paid Rockstar for the exclusive, or how much; reportedly, it was Rockstar that approached Netflix.
The effect on pre-orders and console sales
The video moved the needle commercially as well, according to third-party data published in the days that followed:
Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
Pre-orders on August 27 vs. the previous day | +436% (+606% on PS5, +127% on Xbox Series) | Sensor Tower |
Pre-orders on August 27-28 vs. the prior 30-day daily average | +572% | Sensor Tower |
Total pre-orders before the video | Around 4.55 million | Sensor Tower |
New pre-orders the following week | Around 310,000, nearly double the week before | Sensor Tower |
UK PS5 sales the following week | +33% | NielsenIQ |
UK Xbox Series sales the following week | +34% | NielsenIQ |
These are third-party estimates, not official figures: neither Take-Two nor Rockstar has shared pre-order numbers. Still, they all point the same way, and the gap between PS5 and Xbox fits the debate over how pre-orders split between the two consoles.
Our take
The numbers confirm GTA VI is in a league of its own: no gaming event in 2026 has drawn this many people at once, and the premiere wasn't even free to watch. For Rockstar it paid off twice over: Netflix provided a premiere stage and streamers multiplied the reach for free. And seeing Spanish-language creators IlloJuan and Rubius top the charts ahead of the biggest English-speaking names shows how big the Spanish-speaking community around GTA is. The game launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
