GTA 6 rated PEGI 18: on-demand drugs, sex scenes and dismemberment
GTA VI’s PEGI listing reveals you can carry cocaine and use it at any time, plus explicit sex scenes and violence with dismemberment. Here’s what the rating says.
GTA VI now has its European age rating, and the number itself is no surprise: PEGI 18. What's worth reading is the content summary PEGI published on October 2, 2026, explaining the rating and revealing gameplay details Rockstar hadn't shared. PEGI took the page down a few hours later, but by then its contents had already spread.
Why GTA VI is rated 18
The listing carries four content descriptors: violence, sex, drugs and in-game purchases. The key points:
Descriptor | What the listing says |
|---|---|
Drugs | The player can carry cocaine and snort it from their hand at any time, and take drugs with other characters |
Sex | Nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional sexual fetish scenes |
Clubs | Some nightclubs offer paid private dances with physical interaction |
Violence | Bloody and highly realistic; some weapons cause detailed decapitation and dismemberment |
Animals | Domestic animals can be harmed, though without the injury detail shown on human characters |
Language | Frequent strong language, plus discriminatory language on TV shows and radio stations |
Purchases | Items can be bought in-game, but they aren't needed to play |
What's new and what isn't
Some of this is familiar territory. In GTA V, Vanilla Unicorn private dances already let you touch the dancers, and graphic violence has been part of the series' identity for decades. What's genuinely new is cocaine as an inventory item you can use whenever you like (drugs used to show up mainly in specific missions and cutscenes) and explicit sex scenes. That's a sensitive subject for Rockstar: in 2005, the hidden sexual content in GTA San Andreas, the infamous Hot Coffee mod, led to the game being re-rated in the US and pulled from shelves. Showing it openly now, with the rating accepted from day one, says a lot about how far the industry has moved.
The graphic violence was already hinted at in An Extended Look, but the listing confirms a level of injury detail, including dismemberment, that GTA V didn't have.
What do "in-game purchases" mean here?
The descriptor doesn't mean the story mode has microtransactions. PEGI applies it to any extra purchase made from within a game, and here it most likely covers the upgrade to the Ultimate Edition. The listing states the game can be played without buying anything else.
How GTA VI is rated around the world
Updated October 6, 2026. PEGI 18 isn't the only rating out there. Here's the full picture, from official board records and digital storefronts:
Region | Board | Rating | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
US and Canada | ESRB | M (Mature 17+): Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, Strong Language, Mature Humor, In-Game Purchases | Official |
Europe | PEGI | 18: violence, sex, drugs, in-game purchases | Official on storefronts; detailed listing pulled |
Australia | Classification Board | R 18+: high-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use | Official, recorded August 27 |
New Zealand | OFLC | R18: graphic violence, drug use, offensive language, sex scenes, nudity | Official, registered October 2 |
Singapore (and other stores) | IARC | 18+: discriminatory language, extreme violence, nudity, strong language | PlayStation Store listing |
Saudi Arabia | — | 21+ | Xbox Store listing |
Two things stand out. No board lists a gambling descriptor, and there's no "Users Interact" label either, which fits a single-player-only launch. And Australia's official rating is R 18+, not the "X 18+" that showed up in a PlayStation ad and had people expecting something even more explicit.
What it means for you
If you're buying GTA VI as a gift, or there are younger players at home, be aware this isn't a "soft" 18: on-demand drug use, explicit sex and graphic violence put it at the most adult end of the series. For everyone else, the listing is another hint at what's coming on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: a world with more systems you can freely interact with, including the more controversial ones.
