GTA San Andreas Nextgen Edition brings the whole game to GTA V
The Vice City Nextgen Edition team is porting all of San Andreas, missions included, to the GTA V engine. What we know and why the team says so little.
"Ah sh*t, here we go again." On December 22, 2025, Revolution Team, the Russian modders behind GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition, announced their next project with a teaser built around CJ's return to Los Santos: GTA San Andreas – The Nextgen Edition, an attempt to move the entire GTA San Andreas experience onto GTA V's RAGE engine.
More than a map port
People have been dropping San Andreas's map into GTA V for years. This is different. The goal is to bring over the whole game: missions, characters, vehicles and radio stations, so Carl Johnson's story can be played start to finish on 2013 technology. It's the same idea as the Vice City project, just a lot bigger: three cities, countryside, desert and close to a hundred missions.
- Vice City Nextgen Edition: 2002 game, moved to the GTA IV engine, released January 25, 2025.
- San Andreas Nextgen Edition: 2004 game, moving to the GTA V engine, in development with no release date.
Why the team is keeping things quiet
Revolution Team spelled it out in the announcement: "This time, we will be sharing details more cautiously." The Vice City launch is the reason. Two days before release, Take-Two deleted the team's YouTube channel, and a week later, after an ESA complaint, the team ended support for Vice City Nextgen and pulled its links. The group hasn't shared public links since, and for San Andreas it's showing just enough to prove the project is alive.
There's no release window, not even a rough one, and no word yet on what you'll need to play it. Don't expect it before GTA 6, which launches November 19, 2026.
Vice City Nextgen kept growing in 2025
The Vice City project didn't stand still after launch. The community kept building on it all year:
- March: an HD texture pack hand-remade 700+ textures without AI upscaling, including 90% of the city's ads and signs.
- August: community patch 1.3 fixed some of the bugs left over from launch.
- November: modder xoxor4d released an RTX Remix runtime for the GTA IV engine, enabling path tracing in Vice City Nextgen, at a very heavy CPU cost.
- December: the Actual NextGen Edition modpack from a different group, GTA Trilogy Games, reached Update 25 on December 14, focused on stability, faster loading and vehicle handling.
Our take
San Andreas is many fans' favorite GTA, and its official Definitive Edition version still doesn't do it justice. Seeing the team that nailed Vice City take it on is great news. But it pays to be realistic: Vice City got hit two days before launch, and San Andreas is far more popular and built on the engine Rockstar still makes money from through GTA Online. The pressure could be even greater this time. Whether it ever ships, and in what form, remains to be seen.
