Eleven days after launch, on the evening of November 22, 2021, Rockstar posted a letter about GTA The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition admitting the game did not launch in a state that met its own standards or fans' expectations.

What it announced

  • Title Update 1.02 live on all platforms, Switch included, with the first round of fixes.
  • More updates on the way to improve all three games.
  • A request for the community to stop harassing developers, after members of the team faced personal attacks.

The classics return on PC

Delisting the original versions had been the other big complaint. Rockstar partly reversed course:

Bonus for buyers

Anyone who bought, or had already bought, the PC Definitive Edition from the Rockstar Store through June 30, 2022 got all three classics free

Note: PC and Rockstar's own store only. The originals did not return on consoles.

Our take

Rockstar rarely apologizes in public, which says a lot about how badly the launch went. The apology came with concrete actions (a patch and the classics back) but no repair timeline. The trilogy improved over time and reached Steam in 2023, but its debut remains one of the studio's worst stumbles.
