On August 7, 2023, Rockstar announced that the western and its Undead Nightmare expansion will arrive together on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on August 17, in a conversion by studio Double Eleven. The PS4 version will also be playable on PS5 through backward compatibility.
Price, stores and boxed release
- Price: $49.99 on the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store, with both games in a single package.
- Physical edition: coming later, on October 13.
- Rockstar suggested wishlisting it on both stores to get a notification on launch day.
New languages
For the first time, the game will support Korean, Russian, Polish, Latin American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, on top of the languages it already had.
The two stories
Red Dead Redemption follows John Marston, a former outlaw forced to hunt down his old Van der Linde gang mates — Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella and Dutch himself — to save his family. It picks up right where the 2018 prequel Red Dead Redemption 2 leaves off, so it’s a great way to close the loop if you joined the series with the second game.
Undead Nightmare turns the West upside down with a zombie plague: Marston has to survive the hordes while hunting for a cure.
What the announcement left out
There was no word on a native PS5 or Xbox Series version, no PC release, and no sign of the original’s multiplayer, which isn’t part of this conversion. For many fans, the price of a port rather than a remaster was the most debated part of the news.
