What Rockstar said
“With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”
Rockstar acknowledged that, given GTA V's unprecedented longevity, many players had been asking about a new entry, and promised to share more “as soon as we are ready” via the Newswire.

The update also brought news for the game that was still going strong:
- GTA V and GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15, 2022, with up to 4K, 60 FPS, ray tracing, faster loading and save migration. We cover it in the current-gen announcement.
- Standalone GTA Online, free for its first three months on PS5.
- A Career Builder to start with a business and cash, the option to skip the prologue, and Hao's Special Works at the LS Car Meet.
- The Contract's Short Trips, playable without finishing the story, and Dr. Dre's music on streaming services.

What happened next
The confirmation kicked off almost two years of waiting without official footage. In September 2022 a huge leak of development videos surfaced, and it wasn't until November 2023 that Sam Houser announced the first trailer for December. Trailer 1 finally confirmed the name — Grand Theft Auto VI — and the return to Vice City. Follow everything on the GTA VI page.
