GTA 6 Edge preview: 23 radio stations and a Jason and Lucia closeness meter

Edge's 16-page GTA VI preview adds new details: 23 radio stations, 600,000 animations, working buses and trains, and a four-level bond between Jason and Lucia.

UK magazine Edge published a 16-page GTA VI preview on October 29, 2026, written by journalist Simon Parkin. He watched a 90-minute, unscripted session on PS5, played by Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson at the studio's Edinburgh headquarters, and spoke with Nelson, fellow co-head Aaron Garbut and head of development Phil Hooker. Much of it echoes earlier previews, but there are several genuinely new details worth pulling out.

What's new

  • 23 radio stations, with music chosen with direct input from Rockstar president Sam Houser. Only six had been confirmed until now, and Edge doesn't name the rest or their genres.
  • Around 600,000 animations, with pedestrians art-directed individually and jobs and social traits that vary by neighborhood.
  • Interiors increased "by an order of magnitude" over previous games, according to Garbut, and furnished to reflect who lives there, down to photos and personal belongings.
  • Narrower roads than GTA V, for more believable proportions, and a longer day-night cycle with extended sunsets and nights (no exact figure given).
  • Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V's map, as Game Informer already reported, and Edge adds that Vice City and its surroundings bring the total landmass close to GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 combined.

Jason and Lucia's relationship has a meter

This is the standout. How close the two leads are is tracked on a four-level scale, and it grows with what you do together outside missions: walks on the beach, bike rides, gym sessions (you'll need to buy a membership) or simply driving around. When you share a car, one can drive while the other uses their phone.

Nelson says the couple starts the story wanting to reconcile, and where the relationship goes is up to you. What you can't do is walk away from the partnership entirely or stop being criminals. Can they get married? Nelson would neither confirm nor deny it. The pairing shows up in chases too: on a motorbike you can switch to the passenger seat and the other character takes over the riding, though only when the story allows it.

A city that reacts

Every pedestrian has personality traits (temperament, aggression, what they've witnessed, how you've treated them), and their reactions are systemic rather than scripted. Edge describes two examples: Jason grimacing at a bad smell nobody had set up for that scene, and a staring contest that ends with a man unclipping his dog to chase Jason off.

Weapons change the mood as well. Carrying a big gun makes people uneasy, and they can tell a rifle slung on your back from one in your hands, but being armed doesn't trigger a wanted level on its own. Nelson explains that GTA V's approach, where pedestrians ignored a visible weapon, wouldn't be believable at this level of fidelity. The police system built around what officers know about you is covered in our breakdown of the police and criminal profile; Edge adds searchlight-equipped helicopters, lootable patrol car trunks, stinger strips and police dogs.

Everyday life in Leonida

  • Buses and trains work and can be used to get around. Hooker says testers challenged each other to reach Watson Bay using only public transport, and police won't search a bus unless they saw you get on.
  • Consumables: coffee boosts stamina, protein shakes give a health buff, and cigarettes can be smoked on the move.
  • Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine-health readout, and refueling is quick.
  • Scooter Bros (a car delivered in seconds) and the WAINK app (stolen-car orders for fences) both feature again; we covered them in detail in robberies, money and car theft.

Garbut sums it up as being able to live a roleplay life: shopping, taking the train or hitting the clubs.

How it was made

Edge also digs into development. Nelson visited Miami in 2015 with a small team to research the setting, but the Bonnie-and-Clyde-inspired story only took shape after Red Dead Redemption 2 was finished, a project that rebuilt core systems like traffic, law enforcement and NPC interaction. Rockstar Toronto handled populating the world and Rockstar San Diego the ambient events. The studio works in six- to eight-week milestones with no fixed design document: "The game tells you what it needs," Nelson says.

Our take

The headline number is 23 radio stations, nearly four times what had been confirmed. The more intriguing part, though, is Jason and Lucia: if their bond is measured and shaped by what you do between missions, downtime stops being filler. Rockstar sounds supremely confident (Garbut says the team hasn't compromised on anything, and Nelson puts it simply: "It's ready"), and with reviews expected on November 18, we won't have long to find out.
