On June 2, 2023, Rockstar unveiled GTA Online’s big summer update: San Andreas Mercenaries, arriving free on June 13 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, with a trailer following on June 6. This time the enemy is Merryweather Security, the state’s biggest private army, which is crushing every rival across Southern San Andreas.

Charlie Reed and the Los Santos Angels

The lead is Charlie Reed, the aircraft mechanic and ace pilot players know from the smuggling hangar. Charlie is putting together a squad of pilots and mercenaries — the Los Santos Angels — to take private contracts: stealing data from server farms, raiding targets and bombing high-value sites across the state.

The Avenger takes centre stage

The Mammoth Avenger becomes an airborne command centre with a new Operations Terminal and weapons upgrades. There’s good news for newcomers too: it can be stored and customised in your Hangar, and you’ll even be able to own one without a Hangar or Facility. Rockstar also teased new ground-based smuggling missions and pop-up chances to rob moving targets of cash and goods.

How to get ready

To hit the ground running on June 13, the smart move is owning a Hangar (ideally with a workshop) and an Avenger, which will be the gateway to the new content. Own neither? No problem: Rockstar confirmed the Avenger will no longer require any property.

Confirmed improvements

Alongside new random events, a Tactical SMG built for drive-bys and daily time trials, the update will bring community-requested changes:

  • Claim all destroyed vehicles at once when calling Mors Mutual.
  • A hold-to-sprint option.
  • Custom tags for garages.
  • The Willard Eudora and Classique Broadway become eligible for Taxi Work.
  • More props and weather types (including snow) in the Creator.

These add to the improvements made since GTA Online launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: ray-traced reflections, the Career Builder, the Gun Van, the 50-car garage, the license plate creator and Taxi Work.
