On December 8, 2021, Rockstar announced The Contract, a new story for GTA Online arriving December 15 on all platforms of the time.
The setup
Franklin has left the heists behind and started F. Clinton and Partner, a “celebrity solutions” agency that fixes problems for the rich and influential. You come in as a partner through Lamar, who hasn't changed one bit.
The first big client comes via DJ Pooh: none other than Dr. Dre, whose phone, loaded with unreleased music, went missing on a trip to Cayo Perico. Getting it back drives the story.

December 13 update: the music
Two days before launch, Rockstar detailed The Contract's music:

- Big Boy's Radio Los Santos adds new tracks from Hit-Boy, Freddie Gibbs with Pusha T, Offset, and Mozzy with YG, plus ScHoolboy Q's Nez-produced “Let's Get It.”
- West Coast Classics adds “Dre Day” to DJ Pooh's selection.
- DāM-FunK scores the update.

Why it mattered
It was the first time a GTA V protagonist returned as a central GTA Online character, at a point when Rockstar had already confirmed that GTA V for current-gen consoles would arrive in 2022. With Dr. Dre on board and unreleased music, The Contract was pitched as the release of the year, and it arrived on December 15.
