Rockstar ends major Red Dead Online updates to focus on the next GTA

On July 7, 2022, in a joint update on GTA Online and Red Dead Online, Rockstar delivered two very different pieces of news: a big GTA Online update that summer, and the end of major themed updates for Red Dead Online.

What changes for Red Dead Online

Rockstar explained it had spent years moving development resources toward the next Grand Theft Auto, and as a result was changing how it supports Red Dead Online:

  • No more major themed content updates like in previous years (such as the Specialist Roles or Blood Money).
  • Monthly events would continue, showcasing existing content: Specialist Roles, co-op story missions, Showdown Modes…
  • Seasonal events, experience improvements and new Telegram Missions that year, built on existing modes.
  • Rockstar would keep highlighting community creations on the Newswire.

What was coming to GTA Online

On the other side, Rockstar teased an update “in just a few short weeks” on every platform, expanding the Executive, Biker, Gunrunner and Nightclub Owner careers, with Contact Missions as an IAA operative. That was The Criminal Enterprises, which landed on July 26 with long-requested changes like less effective Oppressor Mk II missiles, sell missions in Invite Only sessions and higher payouts for Associates, Bodyguards, Races, Adversary Modes and some Heist Finales.

What's happened since

Rockstar has done what it said: Red Dead Online runs on monthly bonuses built around a role or activity, with the occasional new mode like 2025's Head for the Hills (Dodge a Bullet).
