One of the best-remembered GTA III mods is back. On December 19, 2025, modder EnglishBen released GTA: Frosted Winter Remastered, a ground-up rebuild of Frosted Winter, the 2010 total conversion that buried Liberty City in snow and filled it with new missions. It has had three updates since, the latest on August 14, 2026.

What Frosted Winter is

The original, made by BEGINit, turned GTA III into a different game: Liberty City in the dead of winter, with its own mission campaign featuring familiar faces like Joey, Luigi, Toni and Mickey. It was much loved, but it also came with bugs, sloppy text and crashes. The remaster, made with BEGINit's blessing, keeps the same mod on the surface while rewriting the code from scratch to fix hundreds of issues and add quality-of-life improvements.

What the remaster changes

The changelog runs to around 4,000 words. The highlights:

  • Rewritten code to modern standards, with hundreds of bug and crash fixes.
  • Rewritten text in proper English, with unique messages for every mission and every fail state.
  • New voice acting: about 95% of the cast is voiced by community members; only Joey, Luigi, Toni and Mickey were AI-generated, something the creator openly acknowledges.
  • SilentPatch, the Widescreen Fix, autosave and windowed mode.
  • Classic Axis, which mimics San Andreas's aiming system.
  • Liberty City Stories' snow effects, a new winter-themed radar and lighting tuned to match.
  • Borrowed ideas: buying your weapons back with a bribe, as in Vice City Stories, and Vice City's triangular radar blips.
  • The ghost town, fully reworked and moved into Shoreside Vale: "explore to find some surprises." If that rings a bell, it's the GTA III ghost town mystery.

What it doesn't have is custom radio: the original's songs aren't included to avoid copyright takedowns, so you get GTA III's stations.

How much there is to do

Hitting 100% is a serious undertaking:

  • 69 story missions and 17 side missions.
  • 50 hidden packages and 50 bonuses.
  • 10 rampages and 10 unique stunt jumps.
  • 12 bodycasts, 10 mystery boxes and 5 terrorists to take down.

The updates so far

  • January 13, 2026 (v1.1): more code cleanup, with help from 1826, the lead behind Seen in Liberty City, plus fixes for collectibles you couldn't get.
  • January 2026: an AI-free version of the credits song, with the music remade from scratch and vocals by EnglishBen.
  • February 8, 2026: the first translations, into French, Slovak and Turkish.
  • March 16, 2026 (v1.2): a long list of map fixes.
  • August 14, 2026 (v1.3): the latest SilentPatch following its big 2026 update and a Widescreen Fix that detects your resolution automatically.

You'll need version 1.0 of GTA III; if you own it on Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher, you can swap in the 1.0 executable. GTA House doesn't link to downloads.

Our take

Frosted Winter is part of GTA III modding history, and the natural fate for it would have been to stay a fond, buggy memory. Rebuilding it like this, with its creator's permission, community voice actors and a public changelog, is the best way to preserve it. The one blemish, AI for four characters, is already being addressed with the credits song, and it would make sense for the voices to follow.
