December 16, 2021 | GTA Online shuts down on PS3 and Xbox 360, including Social Club stat tracking |
What doesn't change
The shutdown only affects online play: GTA V Story Mode keeps working on those consoles, as do the Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire campaigns.
Why
Rockstar pointed to its focus on the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions and to preparing GTA V and GTA Online for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, then planned for that fall and eventually delayed to March 2022.
What it meant
It was the end of an era: GTA Online was born on PS3 and Xbox 360 in October 2013, and those versions had gone without content updates for years. After the shutdown the game spanned fewer generations at once — though the 2022 current-gen launch opened a new version split that PC wouldn't close until GTA V Enhanced.
